On a cloudless summer night in 1971, a slightly drunk young man lay in a wheat field near Innsbruck, Austria. Beside him lay a stolen copy of “The Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe.” While gazing at the stars, the man decided that someone should write a “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” – a book offering answers to “life, the universe and everything.”
I joined the former COO of the unicorn N26 for 10 months to write a handbook offering answers to how to scale a startup. Outside of Silicon Valley and the US more broadly, insider knowledge and experience on scaling startups is rare and dispersed. We conducted extensive research and interviewed over 70 startup executives on all functions of a startup. This led us to distill 99 best practices and organization charts that serve as guideposts to founders.
My involvement spanned everything: writing, researching, interviewing, and fundraising during the full-time writing phase of the book. Later, I served as an editor for the Kindle version. Moreover, I prepared a multi-week workshop series for the German Startups Association based on The Builder’s Guide chapters, and workshops at the Founder and Entrepreneurship Summit (GUF) of the Foundation of German Business (sdw).
