The world generated 53.6 megatonnes of e-waste in 2019, the equivalent of 5,000 Eiffel towers.1 I co-founded E-Rey with friends to increase the recycling rate of electronic waste in Germany and the UK. After extensive user and market research, we discovered that the primary issue wasn’t a lack of recycling options for e-waste, particularly as the EU was implementing a new WEEE law.

Rather, the main problem is a lack of knowledge and understanding of how and where to recycle the products we consume. Even we found it extremely boring to research and inform ourselves on how to recycle correctly.

Hence, we pivoted and focused on recycling & sustainability education in K-12. Our core contribution is worksheets for teachers that integrate sustainability topics into subjects from the curriculum. For example, an algebra worksheet that contains exercises about calculating CO2 emissions (fact-checked). Additionally, we provide workshops and workshop outlines to teachers and community organizers to conduct fun and interactive workshops with children and teenagers. More recently, we started producing short-form content on social media platforms like TikTok to teach sustainability practices in a fun and more engaging way.
